Choosing the Right Face Cleanser for Your Teen

How to Choose the Best Cleanser for Teenage Skin (Without Making Breakouts Worse)

If you’ve ever stood in the skincare aisle wondering which cleanser is actually right for your teenager, you’re certainly not alone.

As a mum, I remember feeling completely overwhelmed. Every product seemed to promise clear skin, but most were either designed for adults or packed with harsh ingredients that didn’t feel right for young, developing skin.

I wasn’t looking for a miracle cure. I simply wanted a gentle cleanser that would help my daughter care for her skin without stripping it or making her feel like she needed a complicated routine.

That search eventually became the beginning of Summer Rayes.

Why teenage skin is different

Teenage skin goes through enormous changes during puberty.

Hormones naturally increase oil production, pores can become congested more easily, and skin may swing between feeling oily one day and dry the next. At the same time, the skin barrier is still developing, making it more sensitive than many people realise.

That’s why I believe teenagers deserve skincare designed specifically for their stage of life, not smaller versions of adult products.

The biggest mistake I see

One of the most common misconceptions is that if your teen has breakouts, they need the strongest cleanser you can find. It sounds logical, more breakouts must mean you need more cleansing.

In reality, overly harsh cleansers can remove too much of the skin’s natural protective barrier. When that happens, skin often responds by producing even more oil in an attempt to protect itself. Instead of creating balance, it can create a frustrating cycle of dryness, excess oil and ongoing congestion.

Healthy skin isn’t created by stripping it, it’s created by supporting it.

What a good teen cleanser should do

A cleanser doesn’t need to feel harsh to be effective. In fact, some of the best cleansers leave skin feeling comfortable rather than tight. When choosing a cleanser for your tween or teen, I recommend looking for one that:

  • Gently removes sunscreen, sweat and daily build-up.
  • Cleanses without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.
  • Supports the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
  • Is suitable for sensitive, developing skin.
  • Encourages a simple routine your teen will actually stick to.

Consistency will almost always deliver better results than using stronger products.

Why we created Wave Wash

When I couldn’t find a cleanser I truly trusted for Ruby’s skin, I decided to create one. Wave Wash Enzyme Gel Cleanser was designed from the beginning with teenage skin in mind.

Instead of relying on harsh detergents, we chose gentle cleansing ingredients alongside tropical fruit enzymes and Australian botanicals to help lift away excess oil, sunscreen and impurities while respecting the skin’s natural balance.

Papaya and pineapple enzymes provide gentle exfoliation, while White Willow Bark and native Australian botanicals help support clearer-looking skin without unnecessary harshness.

The result is a cleanser that’s gentle enough for everyday use and suitable for sensitive, breakout-prone teenage skin. Because that’s exactly what I was searching for as a mum.

More than just a cleanser

At Summer Rayes, we believe skincare is about far more than clear skin. It’s about helping teenagers build healthy habits, feel confident in their own skin and understand that caring for themselves doesn’t have to be complicated.

Wave Wash is the first step in that journey. It’s gentle enough to be used every day, creating the foundation for healthy skin over time.
